History of Room 104
Upon entering room 104, you will see a large amount of stone construction. The outer wall is where the original foundation sits. In the past, the people who used to live here abandoned the area and natural habitat was lost due to erosion. The arch on the ceiling and wooden structure support reinforced concrete. The closet at the entrance was there and was likely used as a storage area in the past. We faced challenges while restoring this room as we tried to preserve the original structure. Major alterations were allowed only in cases of necessity. The decorative glass between the bathroom and sitting area fills an original ventilation window. The bathroom was previously used as a bedroom. The holes you see on the ceiling were ventilation ducts made by people living here in ancient times. It is crucial to prevent damage to the walls due to humidity. There were no signs indicating the previous use of the current bedroom. We believe it was used as a rest area for animals.
The walls were cleaned using a tool similar to a geologist's fine and pointed pickaxe.
Uneven surfaces aid in the oxidation process and allow the stone to harden.
A smooth surface tends to collect moisture and leads to peeling or flaking.
The walls were made this way hundreds of years ago.
The bed, desk, closet doors, and window frames in the room were all made in the carpentry workshop on-site. The stones used for restoration were also dimensioned in the field.
Since MDC Hotel is located in a heritage area, we took care to maintain the original size of the rooms.
You will see openings in the ceilings of all bathrooms and some other rooms. These increase the necessary air circulation to preserve the cave surfaces. Without ventilation, moisture gathers, and walls and ceilings can deteriorate.
The construction started in October 2009. The area to the left of the stairs leading to the reception, including the restaurant and the space to the left of the restaurant, all rooms extending to the right from the reception, were completed and made ready for opening in February 2011. The construction of a total of 22 rooms and common areas lasted for 2 years. To offer our guests a more comfortable and pleasant environment without compromising the original cave structure of our hotel, once there were 70 workers working on-site daily.
