A Building that Bears Witness to History: MDC Hotel

The walls of the MDC Hotel rooms were cleaned using a tool resembling a geologist’s fine, sharp-pointed pick. Rough surfaces assist the oxidation process and allow the stone to harden. A smooth surface tends to collect moisture, causing peeling or crumbling. Hundreds of years ago, walls were made in exactly this way.
The bed, desk, wardrobe doors and window frames in each room were made in the carpentry workshop on site. The stones used for the restoration were likewise cut to size on site.

Since MDC Hotel is located in a heritage area, we took care to keep the rooms at their original size. You will see holes drilled into the ceilings of all the bathrooms and of some other rooms. These increase the air circulation necessary for preserving the cave surfaces. Without ventilation, moisture builds up.

Construction began in October 2009. The restaurant to the left of the stairs leading up to reception, the area to the left of the restaurant, the reception, and all the rooms reached by the staircase and extending to the right were completed and made ready for the opening in February 2011. In total, the construction of the 22 rooms and the common areas took 2 years. At one point, 70 workers a day were employed on the construction site so that we could offer our guests a more comfortable and more relaxing environment without damaging the hotel’s original cave structure.
