History of Our Room 203

This room’s uniqueness was it’s discovery. Construction of the Hotel was nearing completion in this are the main stairway leading to the upper levels and lobby remained. Upon clearing the loose soil we discovered a filled in travel way just to right of the proposed stairway. This tunnel led to what is now Room 203. This led to the dilemma of providing an access to this room. The solution looked simple but the rules of tunneling historical sites made it difficult. The present entry way is actually the basement to room 202. We walled off the staır access to 202 and eventually, with debate, tunneled into 203. The entry way shows a deep storage bin. This was most likely used for storing wine or water. The seating area was used for making wine and the juice was gathered in the basin on the lower right. The sleeping area once housed animals and the bathroom was most likely the sleeping area. All the alcoves are original feed troughs for animals. Only the supporting ceiling logs and headboard designs were added. İf you look at the area around the window that was the actual tunnel that broke into the room. The shower in the bathroom was added on by us. All rooms require air circulation; two holes were bored in this room. Unfortunately one hole had to be located in the center of the stairway. İf you were to look up the stairway you would notice a clay pot, “tup”(tupe), in the center of the steps. The walls were cleaned by using a hammer resembling a geologists pick. The rough surfaces help the oxidization process and allows the stone to harden. A smooth surface would tend to collect moisture and cause flaking. This is the way the walls were done hundreds of years ago. You will also notice holes bored into ceilings of all bathrooms and some other rooms. These enhance air circulation which is necessary in preservation of the cave surfaces. Without ventilation moisture would collect and the walls and ceilings would deteriorate. The bed, desk, closet doors and windows frames were made on site. Stones were also sized on site. Construction started in Kasım 2009. Standing at the bottom of the stairs the area to left of the restaurant, the restaurant and reception buildings as well as all the rooms accessible via the stairs and extending all the way to the right were completed and ready for opening in February 2011. The areas above the main patio level and to left of the restaurant were faced during the same interval. At one time there were 70 workers on site.

Do not have enough words for this hotel. Located in a quiet town sort of in the back alleys. It's pretty far from the airport and on the way there we were a little concerned about how the hotel would turn out to be since we didn't know where we were staying as we booked through a tour company. But boy were we pleasantly surprised! The location was beautiful, the rooms are like nothing we have ever seen. I mean you're sleeping in a cave! Modern amenities, wifi, AC all made us feel very comfortable. But, the best part of the hotel was the food and beverage manager Ercan! He was the most gracious host and so kind! We were in Turkey for our honeymoon and he definitely made it special. The food was delicious as well and the service was top-notch. If you don't stay at the hotel, I highly recommend that you go to this restaurant. You will not regret it
