History of Our Room 102
When we discovered the property this room was actually being used by local farmers for storage. Upon cleaning the room we discovered a tandir on the floor where the bed now sits. Unfortunately most of the tandirs cannot be shown since they were centered in the larger rooms, now bearing beds. The area where the bathroom is now situated once acted as a wine making area. Grapes were crushed and the juice flowed into the catch pot carved into the wall left of the bathroom steps. The front wall was eroded so was restored using stones from the Cappadocia region. The interior walls were blackened, as seen in the catch pot, from indoor tandir cooking. The walls were cleaned by using a hammer that resembles a geologist’s pick. The rough surfaces help the oxidization process and allow the stone to harden. A smooth surface would tend to collect moisture and cause peeling or flaking. This is the way the walls were done hundreds of years ago. The bed, desk, closet doors and windows frames were made on site. Stones were also sized on site. Since MDC Hotel is located in a heritage region, rooms must remain original size. On occasion one meter leeway is given for bathrooms. You will also notice holes bored into ceilings of all bathrooms and some other rooms. These enhance air circulation which is necessary in preservation of the cave surfaces. Without ventilation moisture would collect and the walls and ceilings would deteriorate. In this case one meter was added in the tub and the toilet location. Construction started in Kasım 2009. Standing at the bottom of the stairs the area to left of the restaurant, the restaurant and reception buildings as well as all the rooms accessible via the stairs and extending all the way to the right were completed and ready for opening in February 2011. The areas above the main patio level and to left of the restaurant were faced during the same interval. At one time there were 70 workers on site.
