Although Cappadocia is known throughout the world for its fairy chimneys, hundreds of tourism attractions are clustered here organically. In terms of holding so many features at once, we could call it an everything-in-one-place kind of tourist region. From the balloon tour to the ATV tour, from evening events to grape-harvest festivities, Cappadocia stands out for its region tours on top of its dozens of experiences. Cappadocia’s region tours are categorised by route into three different tours: the Red Tour, the Green Tour and the Blue Tour. In this article we will be sharing information about the Blue Tour. The Cappadocia Blue Tour is made up of natural routes taking in the Soğanlı Valley together with historical places such as the town of Mustafapaşa and the ancient city of Sobessos.

Photo by Camille Brodard on Unsplash

What Is the Cappadocia Blue Tour Route Like?

As part of this region tour, the company you book the service from picks you up from your hotel at around 09:30 in the morning. Let us note in particular that we recommend booking this service through the tour services offered by MDC Hotel. When you book it professionally, you can complete your tour in comfort.

To return to the tour: the first stop of the Cappadocia Blue Tour is the old Greek town of Mustafapaşa. This town was a village inhabited by Orthodox Greeks until the population exchange of 1924. It is said that up to that period there were close to 700 stone houses here. Even today, the village — formerly known as Sinasos — has the look of an open-air museum and retains a great number of stone buildings. The architectural talent of the people who lived in this village is evident from the structure of the houses; indeed, according to one account, master stonemasons trained in Syria and Mardin lived here. The 93 different stone houses and some 30 chapels and churches stand as concrete proof that gifted architects lived in this village. In addition, while touring the dozens of churches among the cave and stone structures of this village, you will also see the Mehmet Şakir Pasha Madrasa, an Ottoman work. And in this same village you can see the mansion where the legendary television series Asmalı Konak was filmed — the very house that gave the series its name.

At the 2nd stop, the tour moves on to the Keşlik Monastery. As we noted at the beginning of this article, the Blue Tour leans heavily towards historical sites, and the Keşlik Monastery is one of the most striking places on this historical journey. The monastery is a complex made up of two separate churches from the early Christian period, a holy spring, a refectory and a winery. Keşlik Monastery is one of the finest examples of the monasteries founded by people who fled Roman persecution at the end of the 3rd century in search of a peaceful religious life.

The 3rd Stop

At this stop, the tour moves on to the Sobessos excavation site. During the still-ongoing excavation of this ancient city, stones and structures shedding light on history have been discovered over the years. At this excavation site, you can observe for yourself the archaeological process the structures you are exploring went through before reaching you.

At the 4th stop on the Cappadocia Blue Tour route, the tour heads to another of Cappadocia’s important valleys, the Soğanlı Valley. The Soğanlı Valley spreads across a 25 km canyon within the borders of the Yeşilhisar district. Home to 15 churches, this valley was an important settlement during the Byzantine period. Often compared to the Ihlara Valley for its natural beauty, the Soğanlı Valley is a sight well worth seeing that does the region tour justice.

Before continuing along the route, lunch is served at one of the region’s good restaurants — a fitting reward after such a beautiful valley tour. After lunch, the tour heads to a mesmerising spot: the Kaymaklı Underground City.

At the 5th stop, the Kaymaklı Underground City is explored. This is a colossal city of 8 levels where, in its day, more than 50 thousand people lived. It is impossible not to be spellbound while wandering through such a vast city 100 metres below the ground. What is more, despite descending to such depths, you will experience no difficulty breathing — a fact that leaves you in awe of the engineering genius used in its ventilation. In this underground city, churches, cemeteries and the traces of life from thousands of years ago await you.

The Cappadocia Blue Tour finally ends with Ortahisar Castle. This castle stands in the town of Ortahisar and is referred to as the largest fairy chimney in the region. After the guides recount the history and story of the castle, your tour is complete. The transfer back to your hotel takes place right afterwards.

Cappadocia Blue Tour Price

The tour route includes the village of Mustafapaşa, the Keşlik Monastery, the Soğanlı Valley, the Kaymaklı Underground City and Ortahisar Castle. The price of this Cappadocia Blue Tour is 400 TL. Let us also note that this price varies for holders of a museum pass and for those taking the tour as a group. The tour fee includes transfers, lunch, guide service and the entrance fees of the places visited.
