When you enter this very large house you will notice a fair amount of stone construction. The exterior wall is where the original foundation was sited. With the combination of abandonment and erosion the area of natural habit is set back. The arches show support and wood in the ceiling is masking the well reinforced concrete. The entry closet was in place and probably served as a storage area. The decorative glass between the bathroom and sitting area fills an original ventilation window. The steps are a little askew as we are required to maintain original workings. Variances were allowed in dire necessity. The bathroom was a sleeping area and, as is the entire house, its original size. The holes in the ceilings are ventilation pipes as airflow is vital to keeping the dampness from hindering the stone walls. The bedroom showed no signs except original footings; we assume that it served as the resting place for the animals – yes, a barn or if you prefer a stable.
The walls were cleaned by using a hammer resembling a geologists pick. The rough surfaces help the oxidization process and allow the stone to harden. A smooth surface would tend to collect moisture and cause flaking. This is the way the walls were done hundreds of years ago. You will also notice holes bored into ceilings of all bathrooms and some other rooms. These enhance air circulation which is necessary in preservation of the cave surfaces. Without ventilation moisture would collect and the walls and ceilings would deteriorate. The bed, desk, closet doors and windows frames were made on site. Stones were also sized on site.
Construction started in October 2009. Standing at the bottom of the stairs the area to left of the restaurant, the restaurant and reception buildings as well as all the rooms accessible via the stairs and extending all the way to the right (22) were completed and ready for opening in February 2011. The areas above the main patio level and to left of the restaurant were faced during the same interval. At one time there were 70 workers on site.
